The biggest story of the day belonged to Adam Walton.

The Australian stunned No. 6 seed Daniil Medvedev 2-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 in one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far.

Medvedev appeared in control early, but Walton completely flipped the match with aggressive returning and fearless baseline play. By the fifth set, the pressure had clearly shifted to the Russian, who once again struggled to solve the clay-court puzzle in Paris.

The upset immediately opens that entire section of the draw.

Another major storyline developed late Tuesday night as No. 4 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime survived a dramatic five-set battle against Daniel Altmaier, escaping in a deciding-set tiebreak after more than four hours on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

Altmaier repeatedly dragged the Canadian into long physical rallies and looked close to pulling off the upset several times, but Auger-Aliassime stayed composed late and found his best tennis in the deciding moments to reach the second round.

On the women’s side, No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula also suffered an early exit after falling 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to fellow Australian Kimberly Birrell.

While several contenders struggled, Sinner looked completely dominant.

The world No. 1 rolled past French wild card Clement Tabur 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 on Court Philippe-Chatrier and barely faced any trouble during the match.

His serve was sharp, his movement looked effortless, and his baseline control overwhelmed the Frenchman throughout the afternoon.

With Carlos Alcaraz already out of the tournament before the main draw began, Sinner now appears to be the clear favorite to lift the trophy.

The women’s favorites also handled business.

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka defeated Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4, 6-2, while Coco Gauff cruised past Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-0.

One of the most impressive performances of the day came from rising American teenager Iva Jovic, who defeated Alexandra Eala 6-4, 6-2 with aggressive shot-making and excellent movement on clay.

Other notable men’s results included:

  • Learner Tien defeating Cristian Garin 6-0, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2
  • Jan-Lennard Struff upsetting Alexander Bublik in four sets
  • Luciano Darderi beating Sebastian Ofner
  • Matteo Arnaldi defeating Tallon Griekspoor
  • Stefanos Tsitsipas advancing after Alexandre Muller retired

Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka survived a difficult opening-round test against Laura Siegemund, winning two tight sets to advance.

Wednesday French Open Schedule Preview

Second-round play continues Wednesday at the French Open with several dangerous matches already on the schedule.

On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic returns to Court Philippe-Chatrier against Valentin Royer, while No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev faces a potentially difficult test against Tomas Machac later in the day.

Casper Ruud also faces a tough matchup against powerful Serbian Hamad Medjedovic, while rising Brazilian star Joao Fonseca meets talented Croatian teenager Dino Prizmic in one of the most anticipated young-player matches of the round.

Other notable men’s matches include:

  • Andrey Rublev vs. Camilo Ugo Carabelli
  • Tommy Paul vs. Lorenzo Sonego
  • Karen Khachanov vs. Marco Trungelliti

On the women’s side, defending champion Iga Swiatek returns against Sara Bejlek, while Elena Rybakina, Mirra Andreeva, and Jasmine Paolini are also back in action on Wednesday in Paris.

One of the more interesting women’s matches features Belinda Bencic against Catherine McNally, with McNally’s variety and net play capable of making rallies uncomfortable.

After a chaotic Tuesday filled with upsets, marathon matches, and breakthrough performances, the pressure now shifts to the remaining contenders trying to survive the opening week in Paris.
