2026 MEN’S FRENCH OPEN: Contenders, Pretenders & Straight Fades

2026 Men's French Open

The start of the 2026 Men’s French Open is just weeks away, and injury issues with several players have made the 2026 French Open more wide open than it appears on paper.

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic headline a growing list of ATP Tour players not feeling it physically ahead of the tour’s second major of the season.

On the flip side, Jannik Sinner is winning everything in sight while Arthur Fils is looking like someone who can become the first French player since Yannick Noah to hoist the chalice on home soil.

Ahead of what will be a massive French Open Intelligence Hub, here are some old coaches’ thoughts on the 2026 Men’s French Open contenders, pretenders, and straight fades.

CONTENDERS

Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner is the one to beat. He was triple match point away from beating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets and has won four straight Masters 1000 events, including Monte Carlo. He looks fit heading into Madrid and should be the top contender for the 2026 crown.

Arthur Fils
Arthur Fils
has returned from a lengthy injury absence and delivered strong results, including a title in Barcelona. He’ll have the crowd, knows the Roland Garros courts well, and has shown he has the nerve to take down anyone in Paris.

Alexander Zverev
You know the drill with Alexander Zverev. He’s a four-time French Open semifinalist and reached the 2024 final. He’s hard to beat early, and if he can avoid beating himself in the biggest moments, he has the game to win this tournament.

Casper Ruud
Casper Ruud has reached two finals. If he’s healthy… and that’s still a question… he could make it three. Outside of Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, no one in this field has accomplished more at Roland Garros in recent years.

Contenders with Injury Issues

Novak Djokovic – Says his body hasn’t recovered enough to play Madrid and may skip Rome. If he arrives healthy, he can still win—but that’s a big if.

Holger Rune – Let’s see what happens in Hamburg.

Taylor Fritz – Knee tendonitis has forced him off tour and he’s likely skipping this event.

Lorenzo Musetti – Long injury layoff and doesn’t look right. Hard to see him playing two Masters events and then making a run in Paris.

Carlos Alcaraz – Wrist in a cast, skipped Madrid, and Rome is uncertain. That puts his French Open outlook in serious doubt.

Jack Draper – Pulled out of Madrid with a dead arm. Rome is now a question mark.

PRETENDERS

Ben Shelton – Won Munich and looks more comfortable on clay, but not ready to win a Slam on this surface.

Daniil Medvedev – Outside of his 2021 quarterfinal run, he’s consistently been an early exit here.

Luciano Darderi – Plenty of clay wins, but mostly at the 250 level. That hasn’t translated to bigger events.

Francisco Cerundolo – Similar story. Strong clay numbers, but not at the biggest tournaments.

Alexander Bublik – Had a great 2025 on clay, but is around .500 this year.

Felix Auger-Aliassime – Can win anywhere, but has been average in Paris.

Stefanos Tsitsipas – 2021 finalist, but that version hasn’t shown up in a while.

STRAIGHT FADES

Alex de Minaur – Competes hard, but serious events are not his forte.

Tommy Paul – Gives everything, but his body struggles over two weeks and best-of-five.

Frances Tiafoe – No, just no.
