Wimbledon doesn’t always get its wild card selections right.
This year, however, the All England Club made the obvious choice.
French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska has been awarded a Wimbledon main-draw wild card, sparing the world No. 21 from the absurd prospect of having to play qualifying just to earn a place in the year’s third Grand Slam.
Had Wimbledon not stepped in, Chwalinska would have been forced to navigate three rounds of qualifying despite being one of the hottest players on the WTA Tour.
The reason? The tournament’s entry list closed before her remarkable French Open run, leaving her outside the direct acceptance cutoff.
Fortunately, common sense prevailed.
Sending a player ranked No. 21 in the world through qualifying would have been difficult to justify.
That’s why this wild card feels less like a gift and more like a correction.

Wimbledon has not always taken this approach.
Last year, Lois Boisson was denied a main-draw wild card despite producing results that many believed warranted stronger consideration.
That decision generated criticism and raised questions about how the tournament balances merit against its traditional preference for British players and established names.
This time, Wimbledon avoided a similar mistake.
The rest of the women’s singles wild cards were awarded to Harriet Dart, Alicia Dudeney, Hannah Klugman, Mika Stojsavljevic, Katie Swan, and Mimi Xu. One woman’s singles wild card remains to be announced.
The men’s singles wild cards went to Grigor Dimitrov, Jacob Fearnley, Arthur Fery, Felix Gill, Jack Pinnington Jones, Toby Samuel, Stan Wawrinka, and Harry Wendelken.
In doubles, Serena Williams and Venus Williams received a women’s doubles wild card, while Alexander Bublik and Nick Kyrgios headlined the men’s doubles selections.
