Coleman Wong is knocking on the door

Wong enters at No. 87 after reaching consecutive Challenger finals in Guangzhou and Seoul. He lost a three-set thriller to Terence Atmane in Seoul on November 1, but the Hong Kong player is collecting wins and pushing toward the next level. His biggest challenge in Kobe might be managing his workload after a demanding Asian swing.

Stefanos Sakellaridis has another opportunity

The Greek enters at No. 132, with a chance to strengthen his position ahead of Australian Open qualifying. He lost 6-1, 6-3 to Wong in Seoul, so the gap against an in-form Top 100 opponent was apparent. Kobe offers another opportunity to collect points, but Sakellaridis needs to do more than beat the players he’s supposed to beat.

The Japanese contingent could be a problem

Sho Shimabukuro leads the home contingent at No. 106, followed by Taro Daniel and Rio Noguchi. Shimabukuro reached the Kobe final in 2023, so he knows what it takes to win matches here. With home support and familiar indoor conditions, the Japanese players won’t be easy outs.
