Who Can Win
Aryna Sabalenka
Aryna Sabalenka comes into Stuttgart as the hottest player on the tour and tops our 2026 WTA Clay Court Power Rankings. She went 17-3 on clay last season and reached the final here, so she already knows how to handle these conditions.
She’s playing with confidence, and when her serve is working, she can control points even on clay. If she keeps that level, she’s the player to beat this week.
Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek is still the best natural clay-court player in the world, but the results haven’t been there lately. She went 11-4 on clay last season and hasn’t reached a final since winning the French Open in 2024.
She’s working with a new coach starting here in Stuttgart after she’s struggled a bit. That makes her a bit harder to trust right now, but her level on this surface is always high enough to win the title.
Coco Gauff
Coco Gauff won the French Open and had a 17-3 clay record last season. Her movement and defense make her one of the toughest players to beat on this surface.
She does have pressure coming into this part of the season with a lot of points to defend, but her return of serve is money, and that always gives her a real chance to win on this surface.
Longshots to Watch
Elena Rybakina
Elena Rybakina quietly had a strong clay season, going 9-3 and winning a title. Her serve gives her free points, which is a big advantage, even on clay.
If she finds her rhythm early, she can beat anyone in this field.
Jelena Ostapenko
Jelena Ostapenko is the defending champion and a former French Open winner. When she’s hitting clean, she can take the racquet out of anyone’s hands.
She’s not always consistent, but her upside is high enough to make another deep run.
Ekaterina Alexandrova
Ekaterina Alexandrova reached the semifinals here last year and went 10-4 on clay. She’s comfortable in these conditions and likes to play aggressively.
That style can be dangerous against players who rely on longer rallies.
Player to Fade
Emma Navarro
Emma Navarro has struggled on clay and comes into this event out of form. She went 4-5 on the surface last season and is currently on a four-match losing streak.
She’s also just 2-8 in her last 10 matches overall. Until she shows better results on clay, she’s a player to avoid this week.
Bottom Line
This is a strong field, but it starts with Sabalenka, Swiatek, and Gauff as the main contenders.
Rybakina, Ostapenko, and Alexandrova are the players who could surprise, especially if the draw opens up.
Navarro, on the other hand, comes in struggling and is a clear fade based on both form and surface results.
