3 Early Storylines from the Monte-Carlo 2026 entry list
1) Jannik Sinner has a huge chance to make up ground
Jannik Sinner missed nearly all of last year’s clay-court season while serving out his suspension, so this swing gives him a major chance to add points.
That makes Monte-Carlo one of the biggest events of his spring right away. If he makes a deep run here while Carlos Alcaraz is defending champion points, the No. 1 race can tighten in a hurry.
2) Carlos Alcaraz opens clay season with real pressure
Alcaraz comes to Monte-Carlo as the defending champion, which means he has a lot to protect from the very start of the clay swing. That puts immediate pressure on him in the rankings battle.
If he falls early and Sinner goes deep, the gap between them could shrink quickly, and that would make the rest of the clay season even more important heading into Roland Garros.
3) Lorenzo Musetti has a lot to prove
Lorenzo Musetti is another fascinating name here because he has finalist points to defend in Monte-Carlo. He has missed much of the season since retiring at the Australian Open, and when he has been on court, he has struggled badly to find rhythm.
Clay is still the surface that gives him his best chance to reset, but the pressure is real. He needs a strong week here, and this tournament could tell us a lot about where his season is headed.
Player to Watch: Stefanos Tsitsipas
Stefanos Tsitsipas is the player to watch because this place has brought out his best tennis again and again.
He is 24-4 at Monte-Carlo for his career and has won the title three times since 2021, including the 2024 title run when he beat Zverev, Sinner, and Ruud on the way to the trophy.
His results have been shaky recently, but this event has a way of resetting him. When Tsitsipas gets on these courts, he becomes a real problem.
