Stars Advance in the Desert
The headline names all found their way through.
Carlos Alcaraz looked sharp in a straight-sets win over Grigor Dimitrov, controlling the rallies and dictating play from the baseline.
Novak Djokovic had to rally after dropping the opening set, but eventually pulled away to defeat Kamil Majchrzak in three sets.
Daniil Medvedev also moved through comfortably, defeating Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets.
On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek cruised past Kayla Day, while Jessica Pegula rallied from a set down to eliminate Donna Vekic, and Elina Svitolina needed three sets to get past Laura Siegemund.
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina also had to recover from a slow start before defeating Hailey Baptiste in three sets.
Biggest Upsets of the Round
While many favorites advanced, several seeded players were knocked out.
- Antonia Ruzic defeated Qinwen Zheng, one of the biggest surprises in the women’s draw.
- Sebastian Baez eliminated Jiri Lehecka, using his consistency from the baseline to frustrate the higher-ranked Czech.
- Aleksandar Kovacevic knocked out Corentin Moutet in straight sets.
- Gabriel Diallo pulled off one of the biggest wins of the day, rallying past Andrey Rublev in a dramatic three-set match.
- Rinky Hijikata upset Luciano Darderi, although the match ended with strange late drama during the closing moments.
- Sonay Kartal eliminated Emma Navarro, continuing Navarro’s difficult stretch of results.
- American Alex Michelsen also delivered a major upset, defeating Ugo Humbert.
