Muchova and Mensik Survive Dramatic Semifinal

Their path to the championship nearly ended earlier Wednesday.

Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik saved two match points against Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev before escaping with a 5-4(6), 3-5, [11-9] semifinal victory.

Trailing 7-9 in the deciding match tiebreak, the Czech pair won four consecutive points to reach the final.

Bencic and Cobolli advanced by defeating husband-and-wife pairing Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils in the other semifinal.

Mensik Closes Out Championship With an Ace

Muchova and Mensik controlled the opening set of the final before Bencic and Cobolli answered by taking the second 6-1.

The Czech duo regained control in the deciding match tiebreak, building an early advantage before Mensik finished the championship with an ace.

The victory earned Muchova and Mensik the tournament’s $1 million championship prize, which the pair will split.

The title came in their first mixed doubles tournament together, and Mensik had never previously competed in mixed doubles.

Star-Studded US Open Mixed Doubles Field Falls Short

The revamped 16-team tournament featured some of the biggest names in tennis, but most were eliminated before the semifinals.

Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz reached the quarterfinals before losing to Bencic and Cobolli, while Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic were eliminated in their opening match.

Alex Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime, along with Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz, also exited in the opening round.

In the end, it was Muchova and Mensik who survived the two-day event and left Arthur Ashe Stadium with their first Grand Slam trophies.
