Taylor Fritz Leads American Charge
Taylor Fritz headlines a talented group of Americans hoping to lift the Washington trophy. The World No. 9 has established himself as one of the ATP Tour’s premier hard-court players, and the fast courts in Washington have historically rewarded his aggressive first-strike tennis.
Joining Fritz are hometown favorite Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Brandon Nakashima, Alex Michelsen, and rising teenager Learner Tien. With six American men in the initial player field, home fans should have plenty of players to cheer throughout the week.
Alex de Minaur Returns as Defending Champion
Alex de Minaur returns to Washington looking to defend the title he captured last summer. The Australian has developed into one of the ATP Tour’s most complete hard-court competitors thanks to his exceptional speed, relentless defense, and improved serve.
His success in Washington helped propel him back into the ATP Top 10, and he’ll once again be among the favorites as he begins another North American hard-court campaign.

Stefanos Tsitsipas also returns looking to rediscover his best tennis. While much of his success has come on clay, the former World No. 3 possesses the all-court game capable of making a deep run on hard courts.
Former finalist Félix Auger-Aliassime and Italian standout Lorenzo Musetti further strengthen an experienced field loaded with ATP Tour veterans.
Nishikori Headlines Veteran Presence
Few players have enjoyed as much success in Washington as Kei Nishikori.
The Japanese star returns to one of the most successful stops of his career during what has been announced as his farewell season. Nishikori’s flat groundstrokes and elite return game have long made him a dangerous opponent on North American hard courts, and fans will undoubtedly savor another opportunity to watch one of the tournament’s most accomplished champions compete in the nation’s capital.
Next Generation Ready to Break Through
Washington has often served as a launching pad for future stars, and this year’s field features another exciting collection of young talent.
Jakub Menšík continues his rapid rise after establishing himself among the ATP Tour’s brightest prospects, while Learner Tien remains one of America’s most exciting young players.
Alex Michelsen continues to climb the rankings, Brandon Nakashima has become an established Top-50 performer, and Spain’s Rafael Jodar receives another valuable opportunity to compete against elite competition.
Belgium’s Zizou Bergs also enters Washington riding confidence after capturing the first ATP Tour title of his career at Eastbourne just before Wimbledon.
Final Thoughts
From Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur to Daniil Medvedev, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Kei Nishikori, the 2026 Mubadala DC Open features one of the strongest ATP 500 player fields of the summer.
Add in a talented wave of emerging stars led by Jakub Menšík, Learner Tien, Alex Michelsen, and Zizou Bergs, and Washington is once again shaping up to be one of the marquee stops on the road to the US Open.
As always, the initial player field is subject to change before the official draw is released, but tennis fans can already look forward to a week packed with elite talent as the hard-court season shifts into high gear.
